My Selfcare Practices
For the last few weeks, I have been making a very deliberate effort to give more focus to selfcare. At first, I started with the more popular idea of what selfcare is made popular by several aesthetic tiktoks and reels. You know - body scrubs, skincare routines, fancy lunches, beauty appointments and all that good stuff which, of course I totally enjoyed. But personally, it felt like a fleeting high (and it’s a little pricey). Then it dawned on me that for selfcare to work and improve your mental and physical wellbeing long term, it must be a plan that you have tailored for your specific needs. This realization forced me to look at what I really want. So today I share with you my top five personal selfcare practices.
Alone Time
This is possibly my favourite selfcare practice. I try to give myself few hours, sometimes a few days to just be with myself. I spend some time away from my phone, friends and even family. I may even create physical distance from my home and the bustling city to “hear myself think”. In these moments I try to learn just a little bit more about myself through some healthy introspection or maybe even use the time to plan, realign and refocus. If I want to really get things cracking. . .I just use the time to sleep! However I use the time, I find that it does wonder for creating clarity in my headspace and improves my self-awareness.
Getting New Hobbies
I have come to notice that I really like using my hands and I love creating art. I enjoy the feeling of imagining something and bringing it to life. So, I decided to explore different hobbies like painting and drawing. I never anticipated how happy my at home “paint and sip” would make me, but ever since I got my supplies and began, I fell in love with a new pastime. Now, I am always so eager to fit it into my schedule.
Connecting With Family
Though I truly enjoy my alone time, I also enjoy connecting with my family. Until I can afford to pay for therapy, talking to and spending time with my mom and sisters are as close as I can get, and it certainly helps. I know they must get tired of my endless stories and numerous crises. But they sure do listen and when needed, offer the best advice and the jokes are the perfect bonus. (My sisters don’t know it, but they really are my built-in best friends but let’s keep that a secret)
Exploring New Places
I am here for a good time and hopefully a long time. With that said, I want lots of experiences and memories to look back on. I want to see places that I have never seen before and meet different people who have equally dynamic stories to share. As such, I have included what I like to call “the Dora experience” into my self-care practices. This includes local travel and eventually (when my coins are right) tonnes of international travel.
Stepping Out of My Comfort Zone
Finally on this list, is living outside of my zone of comfort. I find that my comfort zone has hindered me from living my best life and I mean that’s the whole point of selfcare right? All the joys and happiness that this life has to offer reside beyond our fears. So, I’m taking a little risk here and there (you know, baby steps). And if I’m being honest, I have been happy with every decision so far.
